2009 Mike Press Shiraz

Adelaide Hills 14.0% Screwcap $10 Source: Winery

This is a belter. Thoughtful balance of oak and fruit, more finesse than any Mike Press Shiraz I’ve tried, greater textural interest but still not lacking the generosity of the maker. Mind you, it’s very young and it’s structured as a serious wine with bright acidity and fine tannin. Don’t let the price fool you, this is one for the cellar. You can crack it now, but it was at its best four days after opening when I tasted it. You can’t say that about many sub $15 wines. Decant it, shake it, pour it through an aerator several times if you’re keen on drinking it straight away.

Plums, raspberry coulis, savoury chocolate, measured vanillin oak and Weet-Bix. Pepper and brown spice too. The acidity is a little tangy but give it time. It opened further to reveal boysenberry, aniseed and chicory. This wine is on a journey and it’s one I will take pleasure in joining. $150/case.

As an aside, all the new Mike Press releases benefit from new labels. They are beginning to look as good on the outside as they are on the inside. And we all know beauty is a combination of both…
