2009 Mike Press Merlot

Adelaide Hills 14.0% Screwcap $10 Source: Winery

I used to be a closet fan of structured Australian Merlot, but I guess I’ve well and truly outed myself now. I tried to communicate strongly that the 09 Mike Press Shiraz needs time but will repay that investment. I just can’t stress enough how much this is the case for the Merlot. It’s about structure, structure and more structure. When I first opened it I was sure I could hear Genesis P-Orridge shouting “Discipline!” in the background…

And the structure is a big reason this is a special wine. It will relax its vice like grip on the flavours. Indeed, it gradually loosened up over four days. But it will take a while for it to be content with providing just texture and form. Please don’t be concerned though. The fruit is of high enough quality to make sure that the balance will become clearly evident in the future.

Under all that, there is a flavour profile which already hints at excellence. Briary little red berries, florals and some dark plums. It’s mostly light red gear for now though. Very sinewy through the palate. Chocolate is savoury and not overdone. Acidity is almost crunchy. There’s suggestions of coal edging towards tar along with twiggy notes. Some tomato bush and tobacco leaf as well. To my tastes & interests at the moment, this is exciting stuff at a ridiculous price. $150/case.

In complete agreement regarding the structure of this wine. It's a very serious style, with lots of fruit and promise. Loved it.
