2008 Jamsheed Garden Gully Great Western Shiraz

Harmony and Balance. Two words so often used to describe what makes a wine valuable, yet there are times I enjoy character, richness, and even vulgarity more. It all depends on the circumstances surrounding my opening of a bottle. Thank goodness Australia’s many diverse regions and talented winemakers allow me plenty of choice.

This wine, though, combines harmony & balance with character. It’s a masterful combination from Gary Mills. I’m not going to list all the techniques used to produce the wine, but I’l mention that it’s 50% whole bunch because that’s big part of what I like about Jamsheed Syrahs.

The wild, smoky, meaty stalks are there, but in a quieter tone than its Yarra siblings of the same year. There’s fresh, lively blackberry and sweeter blackcurrants with small red berry highlights sitting on top of the sausages so to speak. Juicy on entry, slinky & creamy in the mouth with soft stemmy tannin fanning out to carry the savoury sweet flavors towards a spicy black pepper finish. Dramatic, yes, but with all the substance needed to pull it off. Chocolate is used in a considered manner.

Nothing dominates anything else. In its style & aesthetic it is nothing short of a masterpiece. A clip of bitterness adds adult complexity. I was having a crazy week when I drank this wine and it soothed me as it stimulated me. I could ask for little more.
