2008 Hoddles Creek 1er Chardonnay

Yarra Valley 13.2% Screwcap $34.99 Source: Retail

A couple of notes now on what you might call the next rung up the Chardonnay ladder. They break the $30 barrier and whilst there are plenty of good versions below that price, these two wines still make me feel like I’ve spent well. Both of them really need and deserve some time in the cellar though.

Honeysuckle, grapefruit and creamy cashew oak form the heart of my impressions. Nectarine and spice are also evident on a lovely nose. Green apple and melon lurk in the background, adding complexity but thankfully aware that they should be bit players. Some pithy white grape tannin adds textural interest to a nutty, refined wine.

So what makes a Hoddles 1er Chardonnay? The fruit is sourced from their Top Paddock vineyard which was grafted over to Bernard clones of Chardonnay in 2003. The vineyard is 50 metres higher in altitude than the existing Chardonnay block. I suspect that extra altitude is making a noticeable difference. Poorer soils mean the vines must work harder too. I’m posting this stuff as I can’t provide a stable link to all the information just yet, but I find it of great interest. The wine intrigued me and I hope to get some into my cellar before it’s all sold out.
