2008 Eldridge Estate Pinot Noir

Mornington Peninsula 13.7% Screwcap $50 Source: Winery

I like my winemakers obsessive, precise and committed to exploration.  David Lloyd seems to tick all those boxes and it shows in the nature & quality of the wines.  These are thoughtful Pinots, great with food (in this case Duck breasts with fennel seeds & a Pinot sauce) but extremely enjoyable to quietly contemplate too.

Raspberry, sour cherries, sage, the old forest floor and exotic spice on entrancing nose. Sour, sweet and savoury balance on palate. A purity is apparent in the acid structure, which is bright and a touch prickly upon opening.  It settles down pretty quickly though.  Light, sappy  and linear tannin on finish.  There’s cola and mushroom as well as a citrus edge.  Oak seems to provide supporting suggestions of chocolate and coal.  Once again, it’s in the background.  The wine pretty much constantly evolved over the course of its consumption with flavours & aromas appearing and disappearing all the time.  A purists Pinot and I love it.

Very complex then but with a sense of harmony to everything that’s going on.  I’m looking forward to revisiting this over a number of years to see what it is up to.
