2008 Eldridge Estate Clonal Blend Pinot Noir

Mornington Peninsula 13.7% Screwcap $75 Source: Sample

Notice the red stripe through the label? It’s sold out sadly. Superior wine in so many ways, not that the other two are light weights.  Like the Estate wine, this is a blend of Pinot clones.  Lloyd believes using multiple clones adds complexity and I don’t doubt him on the basis of these 08s.

Dark cherry, minerals, undergrowth & mulch with a splash of Sarsaparilla and some five spice. Well, those were my initial impressions.  Over time an increasingly intricate tapestry of darker fruits, spice, raspberry & strawberry with significantly longer strands of tannin which draw every last bit of flavour and length out of the wine. Light to medium bodied but with immense impact and length to burn. A hint of caramel on the nose, but not in the sense I would usually associate with red wine. This is the lightest sort of caramel you could imagine.  Acidity is still very important but it stays subtle, allowing the impressive tannins to blow you away. Texturally, this wine just rolls. Gorgeous and seductive & certainly my favourite of the three 08 Eldridge Pinots.  A real knife’s edge wine.
