2005 Carlei Tre Rossi

Upper Goulburn, Lake Marmel 14.7% Diam $32 Source- Retail

The irrepressible Serge Carlei is involved with the production of a swag of quality wines under different labels and from different regions, but it’s his “Signature Series” which I first tasted & which remains my favourite to this day.

This is a blend of 60% Shiraz and 10% Nebbiolo from the Upper Goulburn area, along with 30% Barbera from Lake Marmel.  The Shiraz provides the guts, the Barbera some delightful acidity and the Nebbiolo chimes in with tar like fragrances and extra tannin structure.

The wine has developed a fair bit since I last opened a bottle about two years ago.  It’s more rustic, with barnyard aromas and roasted beef holding their own against the cherries, raspberry compote, tomato paste and black plummy flavours.  Orange peel, wilting roses and white pepper on the nose too.  It’s still full of vitality, with a juicy mouthfeel before strong, fine tannins kick in fairly early on.  Just above medium bodied and with a decent shake of spice on a persistant finish.  Nice and tarry at the end, just how I like it.

Complex and elegant, it’s steal at the price the Duopoly are throwing it out for.  You can still track it down at retail level, although I believe the 06 is the current vintage.

I actually can't take credit for the term, but I am thinking of creating a board game of the same name for wine geeks ;)

For every 3 Liquorlands, you can buy a 1st Choice to place on realty you've purchased…
