2002 Brown Brothers King Valley Pinot Noir Chardonnay

King Valley 12.5% Cork $35 Source: Retail

Being a big fan of both the Brown Brothers NV and the superb Patricia Sparkling wines, I grabbed a bottle of this yesterday to wind down after a couple of important meetings.

Made exclusively from their Whitlands vineyard fruit and aged six years on lees, I was expecting it to be a little bigger and yeastier.  Instead, it’s a more fine-boned wine than the Patricias I’ve enjoyed.

Cut green apples, lemons and zest with sourdough bread.  Strawberries & red berries from the Pinot component are more subtley articulated.  A pleasant, general nuttiness too. Penetrative, clean and crisp on entry with a little width, weight and softness from the mid palate on.

I think the Patricia (2000-2005) is the better wine, but this is very good value within its style.
