I really do have a strange relationship with Rosé. If I’m just kicking back I like it light and don’t mind it a little sweet and confected. But the ones I rate the highest are those that require a little work and maybe some appropriate food. I have to feel for winemakers when it comes to making it; so many styles possible, so many different people and moods to satisfy.
So this one wasn’t really one that I liked a great deal. It’s a sweeter (not cordial sweet!) style with a fair bit of confectionary floating about on the nose and palate. The standard boiled red and white swirl lollies, faux vanilla, sugar coated mint leaf jubes and some black fruited jam. There is a fair bit of weight on the palate but it’s not one of those Rosés that tip over into dry red territory.
It’s not all confection and sweetness though, with a punnet of fresh strawberries sitting next to the lolly bowl and a few slices of watermelon too. To me, it seems an inbetween style, neither here nor there, but I’d say there would be a fair few punters out there who’d enjoy it for what it is. I wouldn’t turn down a glass or two if I was at my favourite place to binge on Rosé; Stradbroke Island.
