2006 Cardinham Estate Cabernet Merlot

Clare Valley 13.7% Screwcap $20 Source: Sample

I wish I could say that the recent trickle of tasting notes was due to me being on holidays, but no such luck.  Life, work and health can throw you curve balls.  On with the show…
This was given 18 months in seasoned oak, with no bias being shown towards either French or American origins.  Silky smooth in the mouth and with fine chalky tannins this is a wine that just feels nice to knock back.  I don’t think it’s trying to make your jaw drop but as a sensual experience it still works very well.  Kind of like languid holiday sex with your partner rather than the frantic rush of a one night stand with a stranger; comfortable, enjoyable and when you’re finished you’re ready for a nice nap.

Sweet cassis, a little creaminess on the vanillin mid palate and eucalypt on the finish. Violets, tobacco leaf and some blueberry notes too.  It’s right in its groove now, so I wouldn’t bother laying any down.  Crack, decant and enjoy.  I’ll leave it there before I say the word “holiday” again.  I find psycho-linguistics far too valid to risk such an event.
