2002 Clayfield Shiraz

Grampians 14.% Screwcap $? Souce- Gift

I’m somewhat embarassed to admit that while I consider myself a great fan of the Grampians region, I’d never really heard about Clayfield until a little earlier this year.  Oh well, they are firmly on my radar now, and I doubt I could have asked for a better introduction.

Beginning to display lovely aged notes of old leather and truffle. Along wth wild blackberries and farmyard characters, there’s also plenty of coffee and lots of black pepper. Fruit and oak are in perfect balance. Maybe a little acetone, but it all works. Delicious and with great drive & ample length, an utterly seductive mouth feel and a fantastic nose.

I was often too busy smelling it to drink it, but every sip was captivating.  I don’t think the wine aroused any extraneous thoughts of worth.  It simply was, and I enjoyed it in itself.

I thought you were a Cabernet girl? ;) Hope you found something good at the bottle shop. I'll make sure I get around to visiting with a couple of select bottles from my cellar when I next make the trip South.
