2002 Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon

Hunter Valley 10.5% Cork $18 Source- Retail

A horror movie about cannibalism, an aged Hunter Semillon and some simple penne with parmigiana and peas. Incongruous but somehow just what I need at the moment.

Developed golden colour, as one would expect. All toasty with lanolin, lemons, orange oil and some lightly honeyed thyme on the nose. Acidity is still in tact, lively even.

The 2004 Lizzy had really begun to annoy me so it’s nice to be reminded what a bargain the label can be. At least 4 years left in this I reckon. That’ll do me for tonight. I’m off to enjoy dinner.

Cheers for the tasting note JP

I picked up a few of these at release, the last of which I reviewed myself back in June 2007. After the last encounter I put them into my cellar with a 'to 2014' tag – it's good to see 3 years on you agree with me – thanks for the reassurance Jeremy!

Personally I think the 02 possessed more cellaring potential than any of Mount Pleasant's other Elizabeth's from this century. I also agree with your comment re the 04, shame really, as I commend the use of screwcap….

    Cheers,
    Chris P

I was extremely excited when the screwcaps became uniform on the Lizzy. Then came the blunt and boring 2003 followed by the strange and ultimately poor 2004. I'm being harsh, but it was seriously nice to see this 2002 trundling along so nicely and with a few years still in it. Enjoy your remaining stash Chris, may the cork gods be kind to you :)

    cheers

    Hey Jeremy,

I drank the 02 Lizzy tonight and… swing and a miss. Not a completely stuffed bottle but stripped of most of its flavour; a little bit of a honey/lemon note then instantly kaput.

    I love screwcaps.

Sad to hear Dave. I really hate to think how many wonderful bottles of Semillon have been lost to cork issues. At least in Australia, the best producers have realised that it's just not the way to go.

    Cheers

I bought a few screwcapped Elizabeth 02 a few weeks ago. The one I opened was very good (aside from an odd crust in the thread of the screwcap) with decent acidity and a very creamy finish.

I have been eyeing some 03, 04 & 05 – but it looks like I should avoid the first two and just go for the last.
