2009 Charles Melton Rose of Virginia Rosé

Barossa Valley 12.5% Screwcap $22 Source- Retail

60% Grenache, the rest is Cabernet and Shiraz. Extraordinarily beautiful colour; rose petal pink stained with tinned beetroot juice. The skin contact has worked magic here.

A nose of strawberries, rhubarb, roses, Turkish delight, cherries and red lollies with everything echoed magnificently on the palate. A touch of blonde pouch tobacco lights up the mid palate before the extremely savoury, dry and spicy persistence of the finish takes its place.

A weightier style of Rosé but there is still a playful lightness at its core. It’s serious & fun, complex but utterly delicious. I only drank one Rosé whilst on my holiday at Stradbroke Island. Thankfully it was this one. It worked wonderfully well with some prosciutto too.

Mmm, good call JP, close to my fav Aussie rose.

It's always sexy in texture and colour isn't it? A rose loving friend and I were at a bottle shop lately and he asked me what to recommend in the way of a rose. I picked out the Charles Melton, and all it took was a comparison of colour to its peers and he knew what I was talking about…

Still, I haven't had the 09 yet, but it's days are numbered now…

    Cheers,

It's generally a fantastic Rosé. I'm more in love with Nebbiolo based Rosés in general. I doubt that will suprise you :) But outside of those, the Melton is probably my favourite. As you say, texture and colour are big factors.

I'll be interested to read what you make of the 2009. Definitely a lighter wine than the 2008 for mine and all the better for it.

    cheers
