Bloody wax sealed bottles…
Anyway, it was worth the effort getting this wine open. I’ve heard from a few sources that 2007 was a difficult vintage for Eden Valley reds but I must say that the small number I’ve consumed thus far haven’t given any indication that is the case.
Extremely complex nose (as one might expect from a wine sourced from vines nearing 130 years of age) comprised of boysenberry, blackberry, roast beef, white pepper and soy amongst other things. The complexity plays out on the palate, which is both voluptuous yet chiseled and defined. Waves of intense fruit flavour are harnessed by incredibly fine tannins that serve to lengthen the finish.
Lots of evolution over two days of tasting, the second day providing better integration without the wine fading in any way. And don’t worry about the 15% ABV. You won’t notice it unless you pour one too many. I’d wager this will cellar beyond 15 years and it deserves a good ten if your patience allows.

This is one of those wines that I love the idea of . . . a top quality eden valley shiraz from 100+ year old vines. Great to hear the wine seems to match the idea!

I was talking talking to Andrew Holt from Poonawatta just a couple of weeks ago actually. The 07 of this is apparently atypical and a bit more Rhone-ish, but it's still superb. I've now had a few 07 Edens lacking fresh fruit and/or strucuture, but this certainly wasn't one of them.
Cheers
