2006 Teusner The Astral Series Moppa Mataro

Barossa 14.5% Cork $98 Source- Winery

This comes in a big black monolith of a bottle which reminds me of the obelisk in Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Rather fitting as we decided that if we manage to procure another bottle we’d leave it for 20 years and then open it whilst dressed in monkey suits, making chimp noises and throwing bones in the air. It’s that fucking good.

Earthen, primal, brooding and spicy with dark cherries & plums, nutmeg, chocolate and even some blueberries. A well judged sweetish oak encasing brushes up nicely against the wine’s more savoury characters. But this is really all about the quality of the Mataro fruit and the faultless structure Kym Teusner has given it. It’s inspiring. One could dwell on it for centuries whilst evolving into a more and more complex being. Yep, just like Kubrick’s movie only the bottle didn’t last as long.
