2006 Kooyong Estate Chardonnay

Mornington Peninsula 13% Diam $34 Sorce-Retail

I, like many others in Australia, am finding the heat rather oppressive at the moment. My solution yesterday was to wander down to the local supermarket bottle-o and grab a Chardonnay to have with some cold chicken and salad. Hadn’t had a Kooyong in a while so I chose this. And wasn’t it just the bee’s knees.

Whole bunch pressed, wild ferment and matured in oak for 10 months (30% new French).

Still fresh & linear with some nice funk. Grapefruit, white peach, the old struck match, nectarine and almonds. Some lemon on the palate too. Mealy characters were present texturally but the wine was driven by its minerality and integrated natural acidity. Terrific length with some lovely spice at the end.

As harmonious as The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” and a lot more enjoyable. Excellent wine that’s drinking to my preferences right now but could easily last a couple or more years.
