2005 Clonakilla Viognier

Canberra ?% Screwcap $? Source- Gift

I opened this at the end of my first night on holidays at Stradbroke, which probably explains why I didn’t write the ABV down. By then I’d shared a 2009 Charles Melton Rosé and drunk most of a 2005 Clover Hill Blanc de Blancs (excellent vintage by the way, and don’t expect a note) so it was a rather decadent choice. Perhaps not “Roman” decadent, but decadent by my standards anyway.

Recollections scrawled in a tasting note book: Blue Hubba Bubba, very ripe pear, dried apricot, ginger and exotic spice along with something close to pepper. Acid structure still wonderfully intact.

Later on I seem to have written nutmeg and cumin whilst also commenting on the honeyed aspects being suitably restrained & enjoyable. Then I became a critic and mentioned that it didn’t quite pull through the mid palate & finish the way I wanted it to and that it had a touch of distracting sourness. No cavendish banana is listed at any stage. I wrote all this whilst participating in an intense discussion on why defining Pataphysics is not a good idea.

Does this note do the wine justice? Probably not, but I suspect it may give the giver of the gift a chuckle if they read it. Perhaps my way of saying thanks.
