2009 Windy Peak Noveau Shiraz

King Valley, Heathcote, Yarra Valley 13.5% Screwcap $15

Gosh, this wine has had a lot written about it already. I’ve come to the party rather late but I’ll lay my cards on the table early and say I’ll be drinking a fair bit of this over summer. It works with a bit of chilling and its complexity becomes more apparent as it warms up.

So we’ve got carbonic maceration and whole bunch techniques applied with no oak influence at all. Tastes a little like a beaujolais actually. A bit smoky and pongy but there are some lovely bright berries and excellent spicy qualities. A touch of rubber does no harm at all.

All in all this tastes like someone grew some great grapes and chucked them stems and all into a fermenter, bottling the result. It sounds simple but it’s extremely clever and totally enjoyable. Delicious little wine at a ripping price. Enjoy!
