I rather fancied the 2006 version of this earlier in the year- http://url2it.com/biia Didn’t think this was of quite the same quality, although it is still a good wine at a good price. With time it may be even better. Who knows?
The first thing I notice about the David Hook reds I have sampled is the awesome farmyard rusticity present aromatically. I seriously love it, and it is here again in the 2007 release along with red fruits, plums, coal, earth, leather and a hint of liqourice. It’s medium bodied in the Hunter mould and the fine grained tannins provide pleasurable friction to a decent plum and coal back palate. The coal is a little much upon opening but with time it settles in. And the acidity sits somewhere between a Tyrell’s and a Brokenwood Hunter Shiraz I reckon. I would kind of like it to settle in more as well. And maybe it will in the years to come.
It’s hard to pinpoint where my (slight) disappointment came from. Maybe it just lacked a little of the depth and nuance of the 2006, I’m unsure. It just seems a “good” wine from an “excellent” vintage. I’ll grab another bottle down the track and see what I think then.
