Hmm, just found out this morning that Melbourne food & drink writer Ed Charles (Tomato- http://www.tomatom.com/ ) rather fancies this wine & so, in point of fact, do I. Like myself, Ed is fond of the King Valley. And he knows a hell of a lot more about food than I do. I matched this with a lemon and rosemary T-bone steak. I’m not sure if that is very “correct” but it tasted grand to me. And as I keep telling myself, “I matter”…
Thought I’d have a look at this after recently tasting Pizzini’s offering from the same vintage. Both really good wines, this one is drinking better just at the moment. I think the Pizzini will have its number when all is said and done though. Of course nothing is ever “said and done”, but what the hell, its a nice expression.
You’ve got your cherries, your almonds and your bitumen and gravel. But we take a bit of a detour flavour wise when the vanilla appears mid palate and the orange skin morphs into a drop of orange juice at the end. Don’t normally associate this level of spice with a Sangiovese either. It all comes together well though. Über savoury with a poised structure and superb chewy tannins not waiting too long to join the fray. There’s even some violets & liquorice which make this a little more complex than many sangis. Yep, a lot of depth and appeal here.
It’s well priced, but when a wine is this good I kind of feel like I’m giving the wrong impression by even mentioning that. This release has already sold out on the website, but if you live in Queensland you can still find it at a retail level. Just ask me where!
