2006 Brand’s Laira Shiraz

Coonawarra 14.0% Screwcap $20

Picked this up in the form of 2 for $30 and at that price it’s got a lot going for it. It’s plummy and spicy with some nice chocolate and coffee flavours too. It manages to be lithe whilst feeling a little creamy and it’s got a bit of power going for a wine that is only just above medium bodied. Some alcohol warmth but nothing that concerned me too much.

The oak derived charcoal is a touch overwhelming at times, combined with some bitterness. Having said that it performed extremely well with a very nice piece of rib fillet cooked medium rare and adorned with nought but salt & pepper. The tannins are bang on although it tapers a little towards the end, and there is a bit of distracting burnt sugar in there.

I haven’t drunk a lot of Coonawarra Shiraz & at the very least, this wine made me think I should explore that grape/region combination a little more.
