Yarra Valley 14% Cork $30
Bit of variation of opinion over this wine. It came to me in a strange way via my very kind (and forgiving) neighbours. But that is another story…
At almost 5 years of age it is still extremely juicy and acid driven. I might have guessed it as a NZ syrah over a Yarra shiraz. I don’t think the acid is out of kilter, but it is certainly prominent. Opens with sarsaparilla along with cherries, blackberries and some vanilla. The tannins are good quality and provide some decent impact on the finish. Quite a bit of pepper as well. Very “cool climate”.
It’s not really my style of Shiraz, but I did find myself enjoying it. And it’s not about to fall over anytime soon. Still widely available from Dan Murphy’s. If you like a lively and bright medium bodied shiraz then this mightn’t be too bad an option at the price (so long as you win the cork lottery as I did). I don’t think I’ll be grabbing another bottle myself though.
