Goulburn Valley 12.5-14% Screwcap $23
I’ve been delving into films, poetry and theory in the last week. In particular works on suffering and questions:
“Every question, no matter how intellectual its content, reflects suffering” – Kristeva
And what we we wine drinking types if not questioning?
An ongoing exploration of another maligned grape, Gewürztraminer, led me to the 2008 version of one of the benchmark wines made using the variety. And it satisfied my yearning for a Gewürtz nicely.
Pale golden yellow in colour with a veritable riot of fragrances and flavours. Rosewater, lychees, Honeydew & Rockmelon, lemons, spice and musk are immediately noticeable. The wine enters softly with a not unpleasant oiliness before the acidity deftly tightens the flavours up from the mid palate onwards. It gets as broad as peach and dried apricot but the citrus notes keep it on track for a worthy finish, one which is surprisingly dry after the sweetness that precedes it. And it’s very spicy. I NEED my Traminer spicy. The variety begs too many questions as it is. But perhaps that is why I have a soft spot for it.

Hi Jeremy, this is my fave Gewurztraminer! Love it, and I heart how floral it is! One of the best on my quest for the perfect semi-sweet Also try the Spring Vale one from Tassie

Thanks DM, the Spring Vale is actually next on my list of Gewürtz to have a look at. I tasted it at the 2009 Brisbane Wine Festival under less than ideal circumstances and I still remember it. Reason enough to grab a bottle methinks.
cheers

Greetings Jeremy!
It must be traminer week!
I've just been completely blown away by a Tasmanian traminer (perhaps not so spicy though) from a (brilliant) McLaren Vale winery and next on my list…Delatite 2008 Dead Man's Hill.
Cheers as always,

Samuel's Gorge eh? Traminer week indeed. I'm yet to try any of Justin McNamee's work yet but I'm very eager to. I've only heard good things. Might start on one of his McLaren Vale wines fist though
Cheers
