2005 Tyrrell’s Stevens Semillon

Hunter Valley NSW 11.0% Screwcap $25- Tasted 29/8/09

Loved this. Makes me wonder why I don’t drink more good Hunter Semillon. I’ll rectify that this summer. A light straw hue with hints of green and touch of spritz.

Citrus (lemon/lime) aromas with a little hint of toast which will no doubt develop if you are patient and cellar some. But it’s pretty darn tasty now. Enters with a burst of spritzy citrus that is reminiscent of lemon sherbet in it’s texture and taste. The mid-palate is intriguingly soft before the pristine clarity comes back at the end. It’s seriously long and subtly intense. I even got a little green apple tartness to add complexity. Delicate and extremely well balanced.

It is of interest to me that I rarely have much to “say” about good Hunter Semillon. It seems a simple drink, but that’s a very deceptive way of describing it. Maybe it’s just elusive, and maybe that’s part of the reason I love it. With some more bottle age there will be more descriptors though. For now I’ll just mention again that this was a truly superb bottle of wine.
