Hunter Valley, Lower Hunter 11% Cork CD $20- Tasted 9/9/09
$20 for a 7 year old cellar release Hunter Semillon. Do people know what they are missing out on?!
Still a fairly youthful yellow with a tinge of green. After a burst of lemon/lime sherbet we get straight into the toasty action that makes these Hunter Semillons so exciting with age. There’s some great spice here to and the honeyed notes are just starting to come along. The finish is exquisite and it lingers without being forceful.
At 7 years, I still found this to still be a fairly “bright” wine. The bottle suggests drinking it within 2-5 years. I’d go 5, but I love the more developed side of Hunter Semillon. Some may prefer to just let it rip.

Picked up a bottle of this at Cru. My thoughts were it is fading, the window on the back is to 2012, and I'd go with that.
That said, I've limited experience – growing appreciation for – the style so if you fancied looking at it two years on, it is still available.
Cheers
The corks are very variable on this. I bought two back from the Hunter mid-2010. One hopelessly corked, the other spectacular, and perhaps wasn't at its peak. I would have been happy to pay $40 for it, so I let the corked wine slip as a result.]
Those bottles have been sitting upright at Cru for some time. I contemplated buying another, but thought better of it. I'm sorry that you didn't get a good one Stu.
If you want to learn more about the style, get yourself some Tyrrell's HVD, Belford or Stevens from '05 (not more than $30, often available mid-$20s). World class.
Hooray for screwcaps.

I'd certainly echo Michael's sentiments. I was lucky enough to snag a couple of bottles that were quite superb…but as the wine is sealed under cork I haven't pushed my luck any further…

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I certainly enjoyed the wine, just that I recognised that it had seen better days and it was showing mere glimpses of where I thought (or wanted to think)it had been.
The Tyrell's you mention are certainly on my radar to try.
Thanks again for your thoughts.
