Eden Valley 11.5% Screwcap $15- Tasted 08/7/09
“And I’ve got no illusions about you
And guess what? I never did.
and when I said, when I said I’ll take you
I meant as is”- Ani Difranco
Vintage Cellars Qld are clearing this wine at the moment, $20 (special price for me cos I’m so swell). I’m told it has won a swag of medals. Care factor? I’m also told you could pop some in the cellar. I wouldn’t bother, I think its charms are on display now.
Eden valley lime, lemon, with talc and a finish hinting of toast and definitely honeyed. The honey grows with time, air and warmth. There is a faint hint of kerosene, so, despite some acidity still hanging in there, I’d buy and drink now myself. Some floral notes are there too, maybe lemon blossom.
There is a bit of texture hanging in with the acidity, reminding me of the fine texture of talc and the taste of lentils (I had it with dahl for lunch, make of that what you will). Other associations are the tastiest lemon honey drop cough lozenges you could imagine, and texturally & aromatically, lemon barley water. Lime is the dominant citrus flavour, but it keeps oscillating with lemon. Fairly interesting all up. Nice line and plenty of length.
If you’re in the market for a drink now Riesling with some aged characteristics, at $20 you could do a lot worse than this, “as is”.

Edit: The second bottle of this was far more developed, lots of kero. If you purchase, drink it now, don’t bother laying it down, medals or not. 86-87. I have nothing to say about bottle variation other than it happens, and for many different reasons. Ask the experts. Anyway, it renders my Ani D. quote a little useless, so anyone reading can have a chuckle at that. Obviously I did have illusions!
