2012 McPherson Basilisk Shiraz Mourvèdre

imageContinuing the theme of good value for money – McPherson, a Central Victorian producer I was previously unfamiliar with. This is a blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Mourvèdre.

Good energy with copious black berry-cherry fruit and complexity generated by subtle notes of iron, earth and grilled meat. A little eucalypt lightens proceedings. Laid back coffee bean oak and restrained Asian spice. The tannin is furry and woody. Medium-bodied. I’d personally enjoy more Mourvèdre in the blend but the splash that is there makes a difference. Recommended. 89
