2012 McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate Chardonnay

imageThe website mentions the Riverina but the bottle makes no reference to a GI. The value is undeniably high. There’s not a great deal of personality but it drinks well.

Ripe but fresh lemon and nectarine with peaks of mango and pineapple. I wouldn’t call it sunshine in a glass – there’s too much finesse and restraint for that. A slip of vanilla, butterscotch and spice but the (cheap) oak isn’t a dominant factor. Nor is the savoury bready/nutty lees influence. Texture is minimal – some rough tannin is a slight drawback. The spotlight is on the plentiful fruit and the acid which animates it. At ten dollars it deserves recognition. 88
