2013 Red Claw Winery Edition Heathcote Vermentino

red claw et al 024This year sees the first of the Red Claw “Winery Edition” small batch releases. They will be available through the cellar door and on-premise with the varieties and blends changing from year to year. It seems a good opportunity for the label to explore new horizons.

The fruit was hand harvested, destemmed and crushed to press in small batches. The juice was left to cold settle overnight. Old French oak puncheons (500 litre) were used for fermentation (no malolatic). All wild ferments.

A savoury interpretation which expresses the variety’s florals in a subtle way. The wild ferments and old French oak has generated a little textural interest to go along with lemon, melon and green apple flavours. Hints of shells and sea spray. Dry and invigorating yet still three-dimensional. It’s a Vermentino which ticks all the boxes. 89
