2012 Willow Bridge Estate Geographe Gravel Pit Shiraz

willow bridge gravel pit shirazA warmer year results in a luxe yet animated and refined wine. In between days. Once again that slight sense of unease – or at least a Shiraz that doesn’t want to fit into any obvious category – makes me smile. I guess the difference here is that if you haven’t been brought up in wine tribes trying to classify the bejesus out of everything then I suspect that this would make perfect sense to you. “Sometimes I think it hurts you when you stay too long in school…”

Opulent blackberry and mulberry. Nothing dead or flat though. There’s a whisper of air keeping those rich primary fruits humming along. A few shavings of cooking chocolate and suave, handsome French oak. Earth, black spice and meat. I’d never be able to pick the region blind myself. But the conglomerate is surprisingly cohesive if you take it on its own terms. I love it. It makes me wish I knew less about wine. 93
