2011 Provenance Tarrington Pinot Gris

Many moons ago, a Pinot Gris was my first taste of a Provenance wine. I remember liking it, although I can’t remember the vintage. I’m in the minority when it comes to the wine media, but I have time for the variety when it’s made well. And winemaker Scott Ireland has slotted this one straight through the sticks.

It has unashamed varietal character yet it doesn’t become an oily, fat caricature of itself. Subdued, waxy viscosity; just the right amount of curvaceousness. Nashi pear, pickled ginger and honeysuckle on the nose with a suggestion of musk. Follows through on the palate too, rolling along to a persistent conclusion. Put this next to some porchetta and you’d be laughing. 92 Very Good
