2010 Salo Hawkes Bay Syrah

The Salo stable expands (to two wines) with the introduction of this inaugural Hawkes Bay Syrah. Only fitting considering it’s a collaborative effort between Kiwi Dave Mackintosh and Aussie Steve Flamsteed. No sulfur pre-bottling, ambient yeast, 18 months in 15% new French barriques. As for the vintage conditions in Hawkes Bay that year?

“2010 was a cool and dry season with low berry numbers and bunch weights. An indian summer meant there was no pressure on picking dates”

There’s 3% Viognier in here too apparently…I couldn’t pick it myself. Black berry/cherry flavours, meatiness and a fair shake of pepper on the nose. Some attractive florals too. Oak is pleasingly under-played. That lovely gravely Hawkes Bay tannin is so refreshing, as is the verve of the wine in general. Medium bodied, totally elegant, unforced and confident. These are the sort of Syrahs I seek. Will cellar well but it’s delicious as a juicy youngster. A sterling effort. Excellent
