2010 Domaine La Sarabande A.O.C. Faugères Grenache Carignan Syrah

A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Carignan and 15%  Syrah and Mourvedre from the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Characterful but challenging.

Opens with a burst of cherry fruit but that soon gives way to an overwhelmingly savoury profile. It’s tarry, fungal, ferrous and earthy. Aggressively tannic too. I’d like more sweet fruit stuffing actually – particularly through the mid-palate. It feels a little boney and the bright acidity probably needs more time to settle. Loads of pepper and a fair smattering of dried herbs on the finish. Those dried herbs veer into bitter tea leaf…too much so for my tastes. I can’t say it wasn’t interesting to drink though. Average – Good
