2008 Burnbrae Shiraz

Truth be told, this isn’t the sort of wine I would normally write up. It’s warm, lifted, curranty and full bodied – these sort of descriptors usually turn me off. Here’s the rub though. I tasted it over three evenings and each night I ended up consuming a full glass. For that reason alone I feel it deserves to be recorded.

Aromas of varnish, raspberry, plum and earth with a dose of coconut oak. The fruit isn’t very fresh on the palate but it rolls along quite well before a finish marred by heat. Structurally sound though, with decent grainy tannin. Despite it’s rough and ready edge (or perhaps because of it) I found some (guilty) pleasure on offer here. It’s a reminder of the flawed nature of my ratings. I guess sometimes an ‘average’ wine is precisely what I feel like drinking. Average
