2008 De Bortoli Noble One

Riverina 10.0% Screwcao 375ml $32

It’s rare that an Australian dessert wine excites me. The last to do so was Brown Brother’s 2006 Patricia Noble Riesling. Brilliant stuff – I’ve downed around four bottles in the last two years. The 2008 Noble One isn’t quite in that class but it’s getting there.

It smells and tastes of mandarin, marmalade, candied lemon, dried apricot, orange blossom and vanilla. Some nutty qualities don’t go astray either. A mouth feel to revel in and a line of acid keeping all those flavours on track. Almonds and ginger are distinct near the end.

My sweet ambrosia is more akin to that of Marcus Chatfield. This one resembles Carole King’s although, thankfully, it lacks some of the saccharin musical production…
