2008 Picardy Chardonnay

Pemberton 13.0% Cork $45

I’ve yet to sing properly the praises of Picardy on this site. Yes, I took a look at what the 2006 Chardonnay was up to earlier this year…but that wine was not representative of how good this Pemberton producer can be. The 2008, on the other hand, is an entirely different proposition.

It’s a man made Chardonnay (aren’t they all, but you get what I mean) yet the fruit and the region are not obfuscated. Rather, they are interpreted in a truly wonderful way. Bruised peach and citrus punch through some delightful funk; cheese, basil and the like. Hazelnuts, cream and spice too. It’s curved in the mouth but finishes with an abiding minerally goodness.

A sweet/savoury tension is never totally resolved but like a dissonant chord that you just can’t quite work out in a pop song that you love, ultimately it just makes things all the more interesting. A powerfully persuasive wine and one that will be fascinating to follow over the course of its life.
