Winemaker Andrew LaNauze really has done an admirable job with these Y series releases. Sure, I like some of them more than others but there’s not a dog amongst them and there are many that put higher priced wines to shame. The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc is a good’un.
It’s crisp, clean and dry with good typicity. Gooseberry, pear, lemon citrus and cut grass over herbs. Not a difficult wine to describe nor a difficult wine to drink.
I recently attended the New Zealand in a Glass tasting and the Sauvignon Blancs of Saint Clair wines reminded me of the uniqueness and value of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc when it is approached seriously. A far cry from the ubiquitous shelves of crappy, harsh and generic $10 Marly SBs which fill our retail stores. Marlborough Sauvignon should not be judged by these wines.
The point of this rant? If you’re after an inexpensive Sauvignon Blanc, don’t just go by the region. The producer is of importance too. This is a wine that will please a lot of punters. Next time you’re strolling the supermarket aisles, walk right past the Wâhu and grab a bottle of this.
