2009 Sorrenberg Gamay

Beechworth 13.9% Cork $40

Drank a lot of wines over Xmas, most were extremely good and only one was corked. I’d say I can’t complain but I hate cork, so that’s not entirely true. This is sealed with cork…and that’s about the only thing wrong with it. It actually pips the 2009 Eldridge Estate Gamay at the post, which is no mean feat. It’s a different wine mind you, plumper and containing 10% Pinot Noir. But let’s get away from the ratings game and mention that between Eldridge and Sorrenberg, I reckon there is potential for some superb and serious Gamay to be made in Australia. Anyone interested in growing the variety here would do well to knock on the doors of Mr Lloyd and Mr Morey for advice.

Tremendous depth with a solid core of dark cherry and cola accompanied by higher toned raspberry. Stalks, florals and spice (lots of cinnamon) with a little steak and bacon filling out the aromatics. The palate is bright, joyous and juicy. Intense but light of foot. A sustained finish adds earthen, fungal notes.

I’d like to see how this ages. Can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t just get better over the next five years or more…cork permitting.
