2009 Teusner Salsa Rosé

Barossa 13.5% Screwcap $18

Whilst there was quite a bit of banter on the subject of colour and what it means for Rosés the other day, it seemed to me that if the revolutionaries were truly out for blood, they didn’t care about its hue; so long as it was sweet.

This wine is not sweet. It is 3.6g/l rs for the record, or so I’m told. On the subject of colour, I will say this; I like the IRF scale for Riesling and if something like that could be implemented for Rosés then I would see it as a positive move. Yes, colour tells us some things about a wine but it is not really the best guide for guessing residual sugar or sweetness. In my opinion, any future revolutions would do well to leave the word “pale” out of their manifesto.

This offering from Teusner is mostly Grenache and Mataro (incidentally, it’s not the palest Rosé in the world but neither is it vibrant or garish). It’s balanced in every way and possesses very good length. What captured my attention though, was the spice and a hint of earthiness that accompanied the red fruits. The quality is beyond dispute and it tasted great paired with some Prosciutto di San Daniele. It’s widely available and very easy to recommend.

I thought the earthiness was really clever too. Really took me by surprise given the colour
