2009 Lock & Key Shiraz

Hilltops 13.9% Screwcap $14.99 Source: Sample

Pretty dangerous wine this one. Inexpensive, very good and extremely easy to drink.

Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side

Jason Brown, owner of Moppity Vineyards, describes the sort of Shiraz he is attempting to produce as “Barossa meets Grampians” and you can see what he’s getting at when you taste the wines. There is an element of stylish cross-dressing about them, probably more so as you go up in tiers. The 09 Lock & Key is more overtly feminine than the Moppity of the same year, but there’s still power as well as grace on display.

Minimal oak here, allowing great regional expression of fruit flavours. Dark cherries and ripe forest fruit with concentrated fresh plums. There’s a whiff of polished floorboards and violets on the nose & the finish brings some pepper and cinnamon/cola into the equation. Beautiful silky tannins…fantastic to see at this price point. A little chocolate matches gorgeously with richer fruit components. Acidity is crucial to the wine, but it seems very natural, integrated and unforced.

All up, the wine is medium bodied but possesses good intensity. Another win for the 2009 Hilltops vintage and a wine that is pretty much a no-brainer at its price point.
