2000 Tahbilk 1927 Vines Marsanne

Goulburn 11.0% Cork $45 Source- Retail

You’ll get this a lot cheaper straight from Tahbilk, but I’m glad it’s retailing near me. Just means I can go grab it like I did yesterday; on a whim.

Stunningly fresh and vital for a near 10 year old. This was my first old vines Tahbilk Marsanne and as much as I love the standard offering and its low price, I suspect I will be concentrating more on this higher tier expression from now on.

Fresh and waxy lemons, grapefruit, toast and spice. The acidity is delightfully integrated but lively, perhaps a touch more noticeable on the finish, puckering the mouth with orange oil and a lovely hint of Tang. Tremendous drive in its deceptively simple line. I think this level of Marsanne should command the same following as does Eden & Clare Riesling and Hunter Semillon. It’s a magical combination of place, grape and vinification.

I think I’ll enjoy it even more in about 5 years time and will probably cellar some for longer. But if you haven’t given this national treasure a go yet, I can only recommend that you try some for yourself ASAP. I’m kicking myself for waiting as long as I did.

Went to Tahbilk on the weekend and it was impossible not to be swept away at least a little by the hisrory inherent in the place. Can't recommend the wines enough either. I loved the marsannes although it was the reds that really did it for me.

The reds are out-standing. I'm just strangely obsessed by white Rhones ;) Certainly a winery I need to visit…
